Review: The Truth Shall Set You Free But First it Will Piss You Off!
Gloria Steinem has written a truly enlightening and entertaining book in The Truth Shall Set You Free But First it Will Piss You Off! It’s a mix of quotes — both Steinem’s and others — and social, historical, political, and personal commentary, and will make a perfect holiday gift for all the women you know. Even some men.
While not at all heavy-reading, The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off! offers an enlightening view of the history of women and the growth of the second-wave feminist movement in this country. Steinem, in her own low-key humble way, gives credit to all the women and men who contributed to the growing equality movement. In addition, she addresses the current political situation, but does not make this the emphasis of her work. That is reserved for the marvelous collection of quotes that provide windows into both personal and public paths for women.
“Gloria brings honest poetry to readers while sharing her experienced wisdom on topics that demand our attention today. From personal challenges to political issues, The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off! explores the power of words when it comes to being a changemaker for yourself and for the good of humanity. And if that’s not enough to move you, the beautiful illustrations will inspire you along the way.”
Steinem explains the first usage of significant words applied to understanding women’s history, such as “intersectionality.” In addition, she traces the origins of some well-known quotes, such as “The personal is the political,” and “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.” Much attributed to Steinem, this provocative turn of phrase was coined by someone else — something that’s been getting some attention in the press around the book’s release. Other quotes inspire discussion of the role played in advancing the cause of women, or inspiring personal growth. Every page of this marvelous book offers a tantalizing read.
Steinem’s discussions of families, children, aging, and the concept of work offer thoughtful reflections on her own life and on how common perceptions might be enhanced to benefit all of society. Steinem’s references to today’s political situation are subtle — but not too muted to take her meaning: “The Constitution does not begin with ‘I, the president. It begins with ‘We, the people.” She goes on to offer suggestions about how work on behalf of women can continue to evolve and expand.
This feminist icon, often disparaged as a Radical only interested in destroying the social fabric of American society, offers a simple and clear definition of feminism. “A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and humanity of all people.” Amen.
I have already begun ordering copies for presents. Once you read the book, you will do the same: for your best friend, your sister, your aunt, your mother — and even your grandmother! Steinem provides a calm and thoughtful, yet powerful book in this age of grandiose, outrageous, troubling dialogue dominating much of our lives. Steinem gives us hope for the future and faith in the past. What more could anyone ask of a book?
